With Barry Greenstein having announced that he will reveal some of his secrets on PokerStars’ online poker room, I thought it would be fitting to discuss some of his career achievements.
Barry was born on December 30th, 1954 in Chicago. He was always around poker, as his father played and taught him at a young age. Barry attended the University of Illinois and earned a degree in computer science and studied for a PhD in mathematics, although he never finished. He’s won three WSOP bracelets, and appeared in each of the first three series of Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament…all four seasons of the GSN series High Stakes Poker and the first three seasons of Poker After Dark on NBC.
Barry is also well known as Mimi Tran’s poker mentor. She is one of the most respected female players around thanks to his tutelage. Mimi in turn taught Barry how to speak Vietnamese. They have an ongoing debate about who is the better teacher: He insists he is the better teacher and she argues that it is only because she is a better student.
He contributed to Doyle Brunson's "Super System 2" and has also written his own book, Ace on the River. He carries a copy of his book to every tournament. If an opponent knocks him out, he will write a brief description of the hand on the inside front cover of the book, sign it, and then give it to the person.
Barry is a member of the Team PokerStars group of players and plays online under the screen name "barryg1".
In his time, Barry has seen 11 first place finishes, 95 cash wins, and as I said 3 WSOP bracelets. He is ranked 60 in the ProRank 1 Position, and I absolutely love this.
When asked what players he most respected, Barry answered : “Wouldn't want to give any of my opponents an indication that I respect their play since it could diminish the psychological edge I might have.”
