It’s been a record breaking past couple of years for sports, including online poker. Not only did the World Poker Tour see its youngest winner last year, but this year’s North American Poker Championship title when to a 67 year old man.
It just goes to show that with poker, unlike most sports, there’s always an advantage to getting older. The older you get, the more skilled you become. Look at Doyle Brunson – who I think, mind you I’m not sure, is the oldest online poker player in the industry.
And what a cowboy. You could consider him the Babe Ruth of poker, and he shows no signs on stopping any time soon. Brunson is now 75 years old, and still competing in the WSOP. This man has been voted the most influential poker player in history.
Brunson began his career of poker traveling with sharks, the Texas Rounders. According to his official online biography, “He has won an unprecedented and record ten World Series of Poker events, including the two back-to-back world championships. In addition, he is a best-selling author and in the world of professional poker, he is king.”
He’s been competing in high-stakes tournaments since the 1950’s, and in 1978, he changed the game forever with the launch of his book, Super System, a complete guide to Texas Hold’em. Many poker players alike refer to this as their Bible.
Currently, Brunson in the spokesperson and frequent player on his online poker room Doyle’s Room, where he releases many blogs with tips for his users, and he writes a syndicated poker column in the London Telegraph. Brunson still plays poker every day and according to his biography, “often hosts high-stakes Texas Hold'em games that cost $100,000 just to sit down. He'll win, and sometimes lose, $50,000 or more on a single hand. But as he recently told the History Channel, "to be a successful gambler you have to have a complete disregard for money." That and a keen eye for what's happening in the eyes of the other guy.”
