Regulations, Regulations and More Regulations

When will it end? The ASA, or the UK Advertising Standards Authority has rejected yet another advertisement for online poker, with the objection that the promotional campaign states that playing online poker instills confidence in people.

What the hell is the matter with that? IT DOES! According to ASA's advertising standards, online poker sites are essentially not allowed to state in their advertisements that any good can come from their product. More specifically, they should not link gambling to sexual success, an improved self-image or appeal to youth. Okay, the youth of America and the UK is currently being corrupted by gambling sites that say their product might improve your self-image.

However, the girl on the raisin box has boobs that increased from a b cup to an f cup, with full cleavage showing, and this is marketed toward young children. Dolls for girls can be dressed like prostitutes. Alcohol, an addiction which its consumers can DIE of withdrawals from can advertise that drinking several beers will result in one getting laid, fast food, responsible for about 90% of the obese community in our society can advertise that their food will result in half naked women dancing in young men's laps, deodorants and body sprays lead to sex in the shower, Levi jeans will prompt women to rip men's pants off, children's television can feature sex scenes and high school kids taking drugs and drinking alcohol, so long as they aren't gambling! Well, if they're gambling on horse racing, it's okay.

Am I sounding a bit like a broken record?

But heaven forbid that gambling sites claim that winning money might just make one a little more confident in themselves.

Heaven forbid it!

There is an obvious double standard in these industries, in that the governments do not stand to profit from the sale of online poker as it does with these other goods, because it has decided not to tax the industry. So of course, gambling marketers must suffer for it.
