Holy crap, did anyone catch the WSOP this year? If you weren’t competing in similar online poker room events, and you paid attention to the game on TV, you’d know how many records were broken this year.
Following the delayed schedule, which inevitably provided the network with the highest ratings they’ve ever had for the main event, everyone’s tensions were high, and this year was the longest wait in the Series.
I’ve noticed, watching some of the Series’ past that players are becoming more and more aggressive, and I think that it is unfortunate to some degree. When you’re watching the final table lately, players are going all-in on nearly every hand. I think that sort of cheapens the game. Honestly, an all-in play should be the ballsiest move out there – and its something that I feel should only occur once or twice in a tournament.. When you call a player all in on every hand, you desensitize players to it, and it becomes harder to bluff using an all-in play.
Still, you would think with such aggressive players this year, that the tournament would have gone more quickly than ever. But this year, a record was broken for the number of hours that Peter Eastgate, this year’s bracelet winner, spent duking it out with his fellow players. It’s got to be exhausting playing at the World Series as it is, spending days fighting for all of that money, but this year, Eastgate spent some 14 hours at the main table. 14 hours! That’s not including break time.. Holy crap, how were these guys not falling asleep? I think it takes a lot of endurance to play poker, no matter what other sports fanatics may say. When you’re at the table that long, it’s very easy to lose your concentration and hit the tilt, so you’ve really got to give it up to the guys that can play that long and still be on top of their game.
At any rate, get on youtube and rewatch the Series, it’s worth seeing.
